History of Calla Lilies
Calla lilies or Zantedeschia are native to the modern-day region of South Africa and Malawi. It’s not clear how they made their way to Europe. But they are depicted in an illustration from the 1664 illustration of the Royal Garden of Paris.
First cataloged in the 18th century by a Swedish botanist. He mistakenly named the species calla lily. Calla lilies are actually in the Araceae family. Along with the caladium and philodendron. Not long after the mistake, a German botanist realized the error. And created the genus Zantedeschia. But it was too late. The name calla lily stuck.
Additionally, by the 20th century, calla lilies grew in popularity in the U.S. And, they became popular in American art. Particularly through the work of Georgia O’Keeffe.

Zones 3 to 6: First, remove Le Chique Calla lily bulbs in the Fall, before heavy rains. Second, clean. Third, store indoors in a cool dry place for 1.5 to 2 months. Fourth, plant in a container indoors with plenty of sunlight. Fifth, move outdoors once all frost or extreme weather is past.
